Description
Barrhaven is a very rapidly growing suburban neighbourhood; located about 17 km southwest of downtown Ottawa.
Barrhaven was established in the 1960’s, where Mel Barr, for whom the community is named after began building in the area. Barr had originally purchased a 200-acre farm with the intentions to construct a horse racing track, however – Barr ended up deciding to build a new suburban subdivision instead.
Since Barrhaven has been built so recently and quickly, it has a very uniform feel, despite being very large (similar to most North American suburbs). Almost every street consists of town houses, with some streets also having fairly large late-20th century style suburban houses. In the older parts of community, the streets wind and turn, and never form a grid.
Barrhaven is divided into many neighbourhoods, including Old Barrhaven, Strandherd Meadows, Longfields, Davidson Heights, Havenlea, Chapman Mills, Rideau Glen,Winding Way, Stonebridge, Half Moon Bay, Barrhaven Mews, Barrhaven On The Green, Havenlea, Hearts Desire, West Pointe Village, Pheasant Run, Fraservale, and Knollsbrook.

Barrhaven is served by six local bus routes 170, 171, 173, 175, 176, and 179. These routes serve the local roads of Barrhaven as well as serving Fallowfield Station and Strandherd Station, where a transfer can be made to Ottawa’s Rapid Transit system with Route 94, 95, or 99. There are five connexion bus routes, 270, 271, 273, 277, and 278, that provide direct service from local communities to downtown during the morning rush hour and from downtown to local communities during the afternoon rush hour; travel time is approximately 60 minutes.
