ELIMINATING WINDOW MOLD
While Ottawa is surely a fantastic place for you and I to live, the cold Ottawa climate is also the ideal place for mold to reside as well. The temperature difference and moisture is the perfect recipe for mold to grow-even on vinyl windows. Easily remove mold from your vinyl windows naturally with vinegar straight from the bottle and make sure to wipe your frames at the bottom where the glass meets the frame. Vinegar is a mild acid which can kill 82% of mold species.
Alternately mix 1 tsp of peroxide with 1 cup of water and let sit for approximately 10 minutes before using 1/2 tsp baking soda and cup of water to wipe away peroxide mixture.
To help control window mold keep your windows dry and keep relative humidity at 50% or lower (according to CMHC, 45 % or lower).
To check your homes humidity level you will need a hygrometer:
a very affordable tool that will save a lot of wondering.
According to the CMHC Moisture and Air Guide-we release 10 to 50 litres (2-10 gallons) of moisture into the air everyday and in the 200 or so days of the heating season that number can be higher. Keep your winter R.H level to 45% or less, keep your blinds and drapes open during cold weather and overnight to provide adequate airflow. Make sure to have good ventilation using a heat recovery system.
